In underdeveloped and developing countries, children become orphaned and abandoned for many reasons: war, poverty, ill health, death of parents, and unwed mothers who have no families or welfare services to help them. In the United States children become available for adoption because their parent(s) have made an adoption plan for them or because they have been placed in the custody of the court.

The children's health is generally good. We refer children with the potential for good health and these children do grow up with no major health concerns. The emotional and psychological health of a child is often indeterminable. Children respond differently to trauma which may have occurred in their life and often there is little information regarding the child's past background or experiences. It is also possible that a child may have an undiagnosed condition. We encourage applicants to be honest and realistic in considering the various conditions they may be open to. Every effort is made to appropriately place our children. A child who has severe medical problems or handicaps will not knowingly be referred to a family who has applied for a child with the potential for good health. However, minor problems or past illnesses do not negate a child's potential for good health. It is very important to understand that a child may appear healthy at referral, and later be found to have some medical condition. A healthy child may become ill or be injured before arrival. As with children born into families, there is often no way of predicting a child's future health, however we do our best to place children in families who are comfortable with what is known about the children. It is our policy and procedure to share all known medical information with the adopting parents. |
