Each case is different and each program has its own set timetable of events. However, based on past experience most families have a referral within 2-4 months after the completion and approval of all paperwork. The International process generally takes between 2 and 6 months and can take longer if the foreign country has changes in laws, courts, judges, or increase in case loads. There are no guarantees! International adoption is subject to changes made by foreign governments over which we have no control. We are here first and foremost to meet the needs of the children. We try to bring children and families together as soon as possible. The child's arrival home does not conclude the adoption process. Post-placement supervision is considered a vital part of the adoption process.

Once we receive your completed homestudy, the search for your child will begin.

File with Your Local Homeland Security Office

File form I-600A Application for Orphan Petition and fingerprint charts with Homeland Security Office in your area. The form I-600 (blue) will be taken with you, if going abroad, and filed in the country with the child's documents at the American Embassy. If the child is coming here for the adoption process you will file in the United States.

Many programs require one or both parents to travel. Our foreign representatives are either bilingual, or they provide interpreters for you. They will meet you abroad and guide you through the process.

AUI requires post-placement on all of its programs. In addition, all of our foreign programs carry the responsibility of post-placement reporting by you, to AUI, for the foreign program source.
