flag Adoption Information for Hungary

We are pleased to assist you with the Hungary program. We have worked in Hungary for over 6 years and are now Hague Accredited and approved in Hungary to work with US families. Hungary is not a big sending country, but there are children that need loving permanent homes.

About our Hungary Program:

Hungary is an Eastern European country, bordered by Romania, Serbia, Croatia, Austria, Slovakia, and the Ukraine. The city of Budapest, located on the Danube River in the central part of the country, is Hungary's capital. CHI has an agency representative working in Hungary who will guide you through the process while you are there.

Children Waiting For Families:

Hungarian Children are available for international adoption between the ages of 24 months and up, including boys and girls.

The children come from loving and supportive foster care families and also orphanages.

We would be glad to assist you in filing your CIS and setting up a social worker to complete your international home study.

Why are these children without families? Children that are available for international adoption are orphans. They are orphaned for many reasons. This is most often due to their birth families inability to parent based on poverty. Poverty worldwide creates the need for international adoption, but it is not the only reason.

Education is another common factor. In many countries, birth control is not widely offered nor is it taught in the family, community or in school. Birth mothers also can lack education on how to parent a child or have the capability to earn a living wage to support the child. So education can play a large part in children becoming orphaned.

In some situations, when a birth mother does become pregnant she may be shunned by both her family and her community. Many times this leads to desperate situations that force a birth parent to either abandon or relinquish their child.

Sadly there are other factors that create orphans, war, worldwide famine, drought and the AIDS epidemic have also created orphans in many countries. These factors are the most common reasons for children to become available for international adoption.

Hungarian Government Requirements:

  • Parents must be 25 years of age or older
  • 5 - 6 weeks stay in Hungary is mandatory for at least one parent
  • I-600A INS approval
  • International Home Study approval
  • List of other documentation will be provided upon entering the program

We would be glad to assist you in filing your I-800A CIS and setting up a social worker to complete your international home study.

Time Frame:

After your completed adoption documents are sent to Hungary, the case is registered. The referral time can vary due to holiday seasons in the winter and summer months in which December/Jan and June-August show very few referrals come through. In general a 9-12 month wait is not unusual.

Travel:

Both parents must meet the child during the initial 3 - 5 day period. Following the personal meeting, the documents are forwarded with recommendation to the Guardianship Office. Once the court date is over, at least one parent will stay in Hungary for 30-35 days and you will have the child with you during this time. This period of time is precious in order to help you and your child to begin the bonding process.
