NAMASTE. My name is Lisa Anderson. Finding homes for Indian Children is my goal in life. I am thrilled to be the India Program Director for Children's House International. CHI has been placing Indian children in loving homes for 30 years now, and is recognized by the Central Adoption Resource Agency (CARA) of India. We are licensed to assist anyone living in the United States (or U.S. Citizens living abroad) with international adoption. This photo is of me with my two children. I have been through the same process that you are beginning twice and I understand your questions, emotions and uncertainties.
CHI's India program is different from other India programs because I work directly with the orphanages, attorneys and court systems in India. We do not network or use facilitators, but handle your adoption personally from start to finish. We sponsor orphanages in Pune and Gujarat. I personally travel to India several times a year and we maintain a staff in India working full time to bring you the best possible service and updates on your children. My Assistant in India has his MSW (Masters of Social Work) Degree and has been working in Indian Adoption for 14 years. Families adopting through CHI's India program have become a close support group. Please contact me so I can put you in touch with our adoptive families. Their insights can be a great source of information and comfort to you.
Indian children are very beautiful, intelligent and loving. They are well taken care of in the orphanages with an average child to caretaker ratio of 2/1. The children bond very quickly with their new families due to the loving attitude of the Indian culture and the wonderful care they receive in the orphanages. Usually, birth families have to abandon them because of economics. One of the main reasons I chose to adopt from India is that the children are not usually exposed to drugs, alcohol, abuse, etc. Their families, for one reason or another, were simply unable to provide for them and chose to give them the opportunity for a better life through adoption.

CHILDREN WAITING FOR FAMILIES
|
Waiting... waiting... waiting... why are these children without families?
Children that are available for international adoption are orphans. They are orphaned for many reasons. This is most often due to their birth families inability to parent based on poverty. Poverty worldwide creates the need for international adoption, but it is not the only reason.
Education is another common factor. In many countries, birth control is not widely offered nor is it taught in the family, community or in school. Birth mothers also can lack education on how to parent a child or have the capability to earn a living wage to support the child. So education can play a large part in children becoming orphaned.
In some situations, when a birth mother does become pregnant she may be shunned by both her family and her community. Many times this leads to desperate situations that force a birth parent to either abandon or relinquish their child.
Sadly there are other factors that create orphans, war, worldwide famine, drought and the AIDS epidemic have also created orphans in many countries. These factors are the most common reasons for children to become available for international adoption.

GENERAL TIME FRAME
- Four to six months for a referral (after receipt of your dossier) for NRI families; six to nine months for families without Indian heritage.
- It can take up to five months for the court process (usually three). Some children have come home much sooner, others have taken a little longer. Our orphanages are in different cities in India, each having a different time frame. Our orphanages have well established foreign adoption programs so your court process will run smoothly. Keep in mind that Indian and American holidays and changes in the judge, etc., can delay your court process.
