Adoptive Parents Getting Started
The first step on the path to adoption is deciding on the type of adoption that's right for your family. You'll want to learn as much as you can about the different options so that you can make an informed choice. Domestic or international? Agency, attorney or independent? Transracial? Special needs?
- Types of Adoptions
Which path is right for your family? Here you can find out more about Foster/Adoption, Domestic vs. International adoption or Agency vs. Independent adoption. You can also find out about adoption for single parent families, LBGT families and older parent adoption; and transracial, special needs or older child adoption.
- Adoption Professionals
Adoption Agencies or Attorneys can offer invaluable assistance on your journey. Talk to several different adoption professionals about the type(s) of adoption services they provide. You'll want to ask them what the process is and what the requirements, fees and average wait-times are for each of their programs. It's a good idea to talk to several different agencies or attorneys as their services can vary quite a bit. For example, adoption from Ethiopia at one agency may have a different fee scale or a different anticipated wait-time than another agency may have. Lastly, you're going to be working with these people a lot as you go through an emotional process, so you want to be sure the agency or attorney you choose feels like they would be supportive and communicative.
